One day I was strolling around my local record store and came across a sticker that said, “Stop Music Award Shows”. I had never heard of anyone being against award shows, so I decided to look into the issue. There are uncountable award shows around the world that revolve around the music industry. Some based on the people’s votes and some based on the academy. Musicians and artists all come together so many times a year to sit in a big room and watch other artists win awards. But, should musicians even be awarded for their ‘talents’? I will admit that there are some great artists out there right now, but a lot of them aren’t getting recognized. The music produced today is very electronic and similar to the last popular song. Everyone is rooting for their favorite artists, but it’s like The Hunger Games. All the artists fighting to win the trophy. Not to mention the crazy amount of controversy and fights that have come up on the big screen during the show. The famous Kanye West and Taylor Swift disagreement shocked the world, when Kanye got on stage and stated that he believed Swift didn’t deserve the award that she won. The shows become very obnoxious, hoping to keep the views throughout the show. And let’s not talk about how long the speeches are after an artist is awarded.. The only good thing about the shows is the music that starts to play to que them to get off the stage.
Putting all the musicians in categories is crazy. An award can’t ever represent what the music means to the artist or to their fans. Putting them against each other is cruel and not to mention the artists that didn’t even get nominated. It makes the music industry so competitive and that’s the reason some of our music today is so passionless. These artists compete for the awards and the money. Some may think that it is a win-win situation because all these artists are getting recognized on national television, but there will always be a winner, making everyone else feel worthless. All the attending artists are civil and are happy for each other, but there is nothing more they wanted than to win in their category. And what about how the media tries to make people vote on who was “best dressed”. It’s about the music, not the fashion. The award shows are just another way to for someone to make lot’s of money because money always seems to be the motive in this industry. There is a secret money making method behind all of the shows. We have to care about the music, not the winners. It’s time we stopped caring about award shows and bring the life back to music.
