The Class 4A Centennial Bulldogs certainly created an interesting match-up for the Class 5A Highlands Ranch Falcons at Dutch Clark.  However, the end result was not what the Bulldogs had desired.

Despite much of the contest being defensive, both the Bulldogs and the Falcons saw exceptional numbers coming from their running backs. Centennial’s Griffyn Anderson showed his versatility with 81 rushing yards and 96 receiving yards. Likewise, Coby Eller of Highlands Ranch rushed for 115 of the 218 total rushing yards for the Falcons.

After the Falcons took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Eller, Centennial compiled an impressive drive ending with a Jake Sanchez touchdown pass to RJ Vaughan followed by the successful extra point conversion, tying the game 7-7.

The Bulldogs continued to display their offensive prowess in the fourth quarter by taking the lead with a 2-yard touchdown rush by Jake Sanchez. However, the extra point attempt was blocked by the Falcons, limiting Centennial’s lead to 6 points.

On the next drive, the Falcon offensive unit found themselves at Centennial’s 31 yard line with the help of Joseph Alber’s 46-yard kick return as well as a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Bulldogs. With this field position, Highlands Ranch was able to take the lead 14-13 in just three plays.

As the Bulldogs took possession once more, they continued to fight by driving nearly 60 yards to set up a 38-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds. Unfortunately, the kick sailed wide left ending the Bulldogs’ hope of victory.

Although Centennial suffered a heartbreaking loss, they played with true determination and were able to build up confidence that was much needed after a 42-0 loss to football powerhouse Pine Creek the week prior.
