Of all the days students get a day off from school, Martin Luther King, Jr. day is most forgotten. Most students welcome the day, as they had not realized that they had that day off until a few days before, a welcome surprise! But, is that really how we want the younger generation to see this day? No, it needs to be seen for the rich history that it was named after.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights activist in the 20th century who was gunned down after years of non-violent protesting and social activism. MLK, as he is commonly known, spearheaded the movement for social justice from the 1950’s until his death in April of 1968. King had accomplished many things before the day he died. He completed his doctorate by age 25, and was an accomplished Baptist minister. MLK was also involved with the Civil Rights act of 1964 and the Voting Rights act of 1965, and he also received the Nobel Peace prize in 1964 for his involvement in social justice movements. But, King is most quoted and known for his “I have a Dream” speech given in Washington D.C during the march on the capital on August the 28th of 1963.

Martin Luther King, Jr. day arrives this Monday, I can only hope that students will not just take this day for granted. But instead look back and remember that we are able to live the way we do today because of the decisions great men made before us.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. day
