With the spring sports season in full swing the Pueblo West Co-Op Girls Lacrosse team has made a huge improvement from previous seasons. This year there is a total of 36 girls participating in the grueling sport, enough to make a full varsity and J.V. team, which happens to be the first time in six years the program has enough players to have a full varsity and J.V. team.  Even more exciting, three of our very own Centennial Bulldogs including myself, Marissa Macaluso, Maddie Moore, and Alana Jackson, make up a fourth of the twelve player varsity roster.  After sweeping the Santa Fe, New Mexico Tournament, which was held March 11th through the 13th, the girls stand currently with a strong 3-0-0 record, and Coach Manuel Torrez hopes for a promising season.

With our first league game coming around the corner, I am happy to have the opportunity to play as one of the starting high defenders for the second year in the row. Although I have only played lacrosse for one previous season, I feel confident in my effort to play a lead role on the team and am excited to catch up with my teammates. In short interviews with my fellow Centennial Bulldogs I got the inside scoop on everything lacrosse.

Going into her senior year and seventh year of playing lacrosse, Maddie Moore has secured one of the starting low attack positions. Originally Maddie has been positioned as a defense player for her entire lacrosse career, but with a new outlook on team dynamics she has already been able to execute an offensive position with ease.  When asked how she feels about the upcoming season, she simply responded, “I care if we win or not, but the most important part of this year is that we are a real team for the first time since I first started playing high school lacrosse.”

Right out of the gate freshman, Alanna Jackson, begins her third year of lacrosse with a starting midfield position. Previous to her experience with high school lacrosse, she played on the local Pueblo Heroes lacrosse team as a defensive player. Much like Moore, she has made a smooth transition into an offensive player, making clean shots and helping out other teammates with assists.  When asked what she believes the team’s strengths and weakness are, she responded, “As a team I think we have so much potential with new faces, speed, and strength. It also helps that we have bonded for as a team quite a bit. I think we find downfalls in adapting to the right mindset to play the game.”
