In a showdown between two of the hottest baseball teams in the South Central League, the Centennial Bulldogs came out the victors.

The now 6-1 Bulldogs gave the Pueblo East Eagles their second defeat on Tuesday night at Hobbs Field to kick off SCL league play.

Though Centennial managed to collect the win, the Bulldogs struggled early in the ballgame. Due to a swiftly moving cluster of dust, pitches from Centennial ace Braydon Jimenez were blown outside and routine fly balls were dropped as the blinded Bulldog outfielders coughed up dust. When the top of the first came to a close, the Bulldogs had gone through the entire Eagle lineup and found themselves trailing, 6-0.

Despite the scoreboard, Centennial coach Jeff Kurtz told his boys not to panic.

“I knew that with our lineup, we would be able to make up for the runs we gave up in the first. Once we get going we’re pretty potent.”

In the first, Centennial responded to the Eagle’s six early runs with five of their own including Brandon Finegold’s two-run blast over the left field wall. The Bulldogs took the 7-6 lead in the second inning following key doubles from Josh Cotter and Gavin Fesmire.

Tuesday night also marked the return of Bulldog senior Johnny Becerra. Becerra, who has been a crucial piece of the Centennial baseball club for the the past three years, sat out the previous three games after rolling his ankle rounding the bases against Adams City. In his return, Becerra was 2-for-4 with one RBI as a designated hitter batting in the cleanup spot.

Defensively, the Bulldogs left the nightmarish first inning behind themselves yielding no errors and Jimenez pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts before being relieved by sophomore pitcher Stan Gurule.

East was able to tie the ballgame in the third inning with an RBI double from T.J. Golob, but pairs of runs in the fourth and fifth gave Centennial the 11-8 edge.

The Bulldogs will play their next game in Longmont on Thursday against Mead High School.
