In what was likely the game to determine the South Central League Champion, the Centennial Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to defeat their league rival, the South Colts. Things did not look promising for the Bulldogs, the Colts came out fast and scored early.
Seven minutes into the game, South senior James West scored off of a corner kick, putting the Colts up 1-0, but the Bulldogs answered nine minutes later, when Francisco Chavez scored a terrific header off a cross from Dylan Aragon tying the game 1-1. Not even five minutes later, South answered again with another goal off a corner made by senior Alek Roy making it 2-1.
Immediately after, the Bulldogs took complete control of the match, with another goal from Francisco Chavez. A missile from 25 yards out, bringing the game to a tie. “Coach is always telling me to shoot, and I finally decided to listen. I took the shot cause we were down and it worked out,” Chavez said.
Soon after, South lost all momentum as Grant McCafferty scored off a free kick bringing the Bulldogs to a 3-2 lead. No goals were scored in the second half, while Centennial dominated the rest of the game.
With this win the Bulldogs are in a great position to win the SC-L Title. Chavez sounds confident about winning league, but noted they still have to perform well against their remaining league opponents, including a tough challenge in facing Pueblo West. “We have work to do against West, anything can happen,” Chavez said.
