The rumors of schools that were being decided to close have been spreading the entire year, and the Board of Education has finally put our rumors to rest. On Thursday, the 28th of March, The Board of Education announced that they are planning to close two schools at the end of the current school year- Minnequa Elementary School and Heroes K-8 Academy.

Parents immediately began fighting against the decision, making claims of already overcrowded classrooms and lack of teachers to control said full classrooms. Meetings have been planned to take place at both schools to take further actions in this situation(Heroes on Monday from 6-7:30 and Minnequa on Thursday from 6-7:30), despite the Board’s agreement that the process of the schools’ closures shall continue.

This doesn’t keep other schools in the clear, though. These were the first two to be decided and will be the first to be closed, but many other schools have been threatened with closure. These schools include (but are not limited to) Carlile Elementary School, Bradford Elementary School, Risley International Academy of Innovation, Heroes Middle School, East High School, and Centennial High School.

It is very likely that more schools will be closed, so the battle to keep our schools open is not yet over. However, it is very hard to try and rally the forces to keep these schools open when the reason for closure is a lack of structural soundness in the schools. The buildings are crumbling and falling apart, racking up bills to try and repair what is now almost virtually unfixable.

So, what does this mean for us? The truth is, we don’t really know yet. The D60 Board of Education has scheduled a meeting on April 9, 2019 to vote on the closure of the schools nad plan what to do in the coming months and years.

Not much has been reported about the threat looming over schools on the list of possible closure, but we do know that there will be more news to come soon. Decisions are being made quickly, and plans are changing just as fast. At this point, almost everything is fairly unpredictable.
